Who Taught Your Inner Voice to Talk Like That?

You are the very first person to hear your own thoughts. All day long, before anyone else gets a word in, you are talking to yourself. So here is a question worth sitting with. What is that voice actually saying?
For a lot of us, the inner voice is harsh in a way we would never be with a friend. It criticizes, it predicts the worst, it replays our mistakes on a loop. And because it sounds exactly like us, we assume it is telling the truth. It is not the truth. It is a habit, learned somewhere, a long time ago.
The good news is that anything learned can be relearned. You can reprogram the voice, and it starts with simply noticing it. Catch the harsh line as it happens and name it. Oh, there is that old thought again.
Then you refocus and reframe. Not with fake cheer, which never sticks, but with something truer and kinder. “I am struggling with this and I am still trying” is a very different sentence than “I always ruin everything.” Same situation. Still honest. No longer cruel.
Be more selective about your self-talk than you are about almost anything else. You are the one who has to listen to it all day. Make it a voice worth hearing.
