Pull the Weeds by the Roots

Anyone who has weeded a garden knows the temptation. You grab the weed, snap it off at the soil line, and the bed looks clean. For about a week. Then it is right back, because you left the root in the ground.

Our thoughts and habits work the same way. We treat the surface. We manage the symptom, distract ourselves, white-knuckle our way through. And then we wonder why the same feeling, the same pattern, the same fear keeps growing back in the same spot.

Pulling a weed by the root takes more. First you have to identify it, to actually look and say, this thought is a weed, this one is not serving me. Then you get underneath it and ask where it comes from. Often it traces back further than you expect, to something you learned to believe a long time ago.

It is slower, and sometimes it is tender work. But a weed pulled by the root does not come back the way a snapped one does. You make real room. And into that room, you get to plant something you actually want.

You do not have to clear the whole garden today. Pick one weed. Name it. Find its root. That is a real day's work in the soul garden.
