Old Habits Are Heavy

Picture a teeter-totter, the kind from the playground. On one end sits everything you have always done. The old reactions, the worn-in thoughts, the ways of coping you learned a long time ago. That end is heavy. It has years of weight on it.

When you decide to change something, you climb onto the empty end and ask it to lift all of that. At first it barely moves. Of course it does not. You are one new choice against a lifetime of practice.

This is why change feels so hard at the start, and why people give up and call themselves weak. They are not weak. They are simply underestimating how heavy old habits are, and expecting the board to balance on day one.

But here is the good news about a teeter-totter. You do not have to lift the whole thing at once. Every time you make the new choice, you add a little weight to your end. One mindful pause. One kinder thought. One small different action. Slowly, the balance shifts.

Be patient with the weight. You are not failing because it is hard. It is hard because it matters, and because you are moving something real.
